ExxonMobil Information Technology (EMIT) is a global organization that works in partnership with all ExxonMobil business units to provide the technology solutions needed to run a complex, fully integrated global business. Our IT organization offers new hires the opportunity to work with a wide variety of technologies and learn from other EMIT associates around the world to develop, implement and support our business and technical applications and their underlying infrastructure. EMIT will try to match your interests, academic background and experience with your initial assignment, which typically involves applications development services, computing infrastructure, data management or business support. You will be expected to accept responsibility early and to work on global, virtual teams.

Technical Application opportunities

Our Technical Application teams handle as much data as the Internet powerhouses and have a growth rate to match.  ExxonMobil is an industry leader in the use of high-performance computing (HPC) technology.  To address the computing needs of both the geoscience and engineering communities within ExxonMobil, IT covers the worlds of UNIX/LINUX and the latest Microsoft technologies.  Here are a few opportunities you may find within Technical Applications at ExxonMobil:

  • Developing and supporting integrated scientific applications for geoscience and engineering activities and projects
  • Developing and supporting object-oriented software using C++, C# and Java
  • Developing and supporting high-performance analysis and visualization software on some of the world’s most powerful super computers

Infrastructure opportunities

ExxonMobil data centers are among the largest and most efficient of their kind, capable of processing hundreds of millions of computer instructions per second. Located in key sites around the world, these centers provide the computing and communications foundation for tens of thousands of users.  As an analyst in Infrastructure, your initial assignment could involve:

  • Installing, configuring and supporting servers and mainframes that house thousands of key business applications and databases
  • Supporting automation tools for managing terabytes of stored data
  • Protecting corporate networks from hackers and virus attacks
  • Enabling internet, intranet and e-business connectivity
  • Providing email and collaboration tools for worldwide use
  • Supporting global standard configurations for desktop and laptop workstations and providing Windows and UNIX server desktop support
  • Supporting high-performance computing systems for seismic processing, reservoir simulations and break-through Upstream research work
  • Participating as a member of a worldwide team in new infrastructure projects

Business Application opportunities

As an analyst in Business Applications, a new employee will quickly assume responsibility to assist with applications support for ExxonMobil’s worldwide business. You are encouraged to dive in to your first assignment and apply your technical knowledge of software and hardware products to develop applications solutions for real business challenges. You will have the opportunity to work hand-in-hand with a team of high-caliber professionals from around the globe to meet these challenges. A wide variety of assignments await you, which could include:

  • Designing and enhancing applications to solve complex business challenges, with focus on user-centered design
  • Utilizing analytics and other data sciences tools to analyze and predict future trends as well as data modeling and managing large databases
  • Structuring, integrating and supporting complex third-party software, such as SAP, for the latest corporate initiative or project
  • Analyzing global application performance, resolving critical problems and implementing upgrades to software products

Your development

Your early career development within ExxonMobil IT (EMIT) will be focused on quickly developing core technical and business skills within your initial job assignment.  EMIT's objective is to place new hires into challenging positions so that you can immediately begin an on-the-job training program tailored to your scope of responsibility .  This will include formal training as needed to introduce or develop essential platform or programming language skills through on-site or off-site instructor-led training, access to self-study training materials and a technical mentor who will be assigned to help you get started.  EMIT also has a formal new hire orientation program that is conducted over the first few years of your career that will help develop your knowledge of ExxonMobil and EMIT.

At each stage of your career, you will undertake activities of increasing responsibility and can expect to have broadening assignments in other technical areas within the first five years.  There are many different career paths available within EMIT and ExxonMobil.  Assignments across EMIT or in any of the business lines are possible as either developmental assignments or as a career change.  Ultimately, the skills required to become a senior technical professional or senior manager include a high level of technical competence, business judgment, leadership and personal effectiveness.
